Situated at 8 kilometres to the south of the downtown Oakland, is the Oakland International Airport, which has an IATA code of OAK. It is one of three international airports in the San Francisco Bay Area. The airport caters to passengers generally travelling to other US destinations, as well as Europe and Mexico.

For Southwest Airlines and Allegiant Air, Oakland International Airport is their primary hub. Alaska Airlines along with sister-carrier Horizon Air, are the second-most busiest carrier operating out of the airport. Oakland International Airport has an advantage over San Francisco International Airport, and that is its record of a high punctuality of on-time arrival rate, despite continued inclement weather conditions. Among the top 40 busiest North American airports the airport held the number one position for the timely arrival of the aircraft in 2009.

There are 3 flight schools namely the Alameda Aero Club, Lou Fields Aviation and Oakland Flyers which are situated within the vicinity of the airport. Over 30 vintage, modern civilian and military airplanes adorn the Oakland Aviation Museum that highlights the life history of the prominent aviation industry innovators and aviators.

Buses take passengers between the Airport station and the terminal. At present under construction, the Oakland Airport Connector is an automated mover of passengers, which will directly connect the terminal buildings with the BART Coliseum Station at Oakland International Airport.
