Being the third largest town in the Northern Territory of Australia, Alice Springs is home to approximately 28,500 people. The locals refer to the town as The Alice or simply just Alice. The town is located a little under 300 kilometres from the southern border of the Northern Territory and South Australia.
The town sits on the Todd River, which is dry most of the time, to the north of the MacDonnell Ranges. Alice Springs was named after Lady Alice Todd, the wife of Sir Charles Todd by an English surveyor.
Alice Springs is called Mparntwe by the Aborigines of the Arrernte tribe who have inhabited The Alice for thousands of years. The city is an excellent location to discover the rich Aboriginal culture, and even pick up a genuine indigenous art piece.
