More about Portugal

It's no wonder that Portugal has become a hugely popular travel destination. It has long coastlines and national parks (for the outdoorsy types), vineyards and mountains as well as cathedrals and historic architecture. You could easily spend months in Portugal and still have so much more to see. Sit in quaint bars and sip on wine while eating delicious Portuguese tapas. If you're a seafood lover, then you'll feel right at home.

What prices you can expect to pay

It's handy to know upfront what sort of prices you might pay for your basic travel and it's a great way to start your planning. Your morning barista coffee will set you back about €2 and a warm treat from the bakery on your way past will be around €2 also. If you're eating out then there's no limit really but you can expect to pay around €20 for a sit-down meal with drinks. For campervan travel, you can pick up a bunch of groceries for the week for about €40.

One of our top tips to save on the cost of travelling Portugal is skipping taxis and just using public transport. Of course if you have your own campervan this won't be an issue but if you don't then that's an easy way to keep more money in your pocket for food and activities. You can also hire bikes in the major cities and these cost around €14 per day. This is a great way to fit a lot of sightseeing into your day.

Handy emergency contacts

Fire Energency: 112
Medical Emergencies: 112,
Police: 112

If you require police assistance, but your situation is not urgent, you can visit the local police stations. Bigger cities, such as Lisbon, Porto, Portimão and Cascais, have tourist police stations too which you can call on 21 342 1634 or 21 342 1623.

For crime-related assistance you can also get help through Portugal's Victims of Crime (APAV). APAV in Lisbon can be contacted on 21 358 7900 or you can visit their website.

Internet and calls

There is Wi-Fi in Portugal however it is not particularly widespread. If you're in the country for a bit, we recommend picking up a SIM card which is pretty affordable and easy to get. Portugal has three main telephone networks - MEO, NOS and Vodafone. Vodafone is our top pick in terms of coverage vs. price.

If you're flying into Porto or Lisbon airport, you can easily pick one up there from a kiosk where they can help you select the most appropriate package for you depending on how much calls and data you like.

Portugal Campgrounds

The best thing about holidaying in Portugal is that their camping sites are some of the cheapest in Western Europe. Most campsites will ask to check your passport when you stay there for security purposes and theft and other crimes are pretty uncommon in most sites around the country.
