Situated in the southern part of Portugal, in the Algarve region is the city of Faro. Faro is both a city and a municipality, and the southernmost city in the country. There are approximately 50,000 residents in Faro, while the outer metropolitan area bolsters the numbers to some 64,500. The urban footprint of the city is some 201 share kilometres.

Whilst the city is somewhat small, it still has a rich cultural heritage, with a vibrant history, unbelievable island beaches and is also home to the stunning Ria Formosa nature reserve, which is definitely worth making a booking for one of the daily boat trips to the reserve.

The city started out in Roman times, and at that stage the city was known as Ossonoba. During the 800's AD, it became the capital to a flash in the pan prince. The city then went through two more name changes, first off being Santa Maria and then Harune. Then in the mid 1300's, it became part of the Portuguese territory.

Some of the wonderful attractions to take in whilst in Faro include Barreta Island, the Cathedral of Faro, Vale do Lobo, Tavira Island, the Castle of Silves, Manta Roa, the Church of Sao Lourenco, Silves Cathedral, Estadio Algarve and the Castle of Alvor.
