It was constructed during the Ptolemaic dynasty, between 180 BCE and 47 BCE, and is dedicated to two gods: the crocodile god Sobek and the falcon-headed god Haroeris. The temple is laid out on a traditional plan, with two separate doorways extending its entire length, past the halls and antechambers, ultimately leading to two sanctuaries, one to Sobek and the other to Haroeris. There is evidence that construction and building continued for some four hundred years, the latest Roman emperor featured being Macrinus (AD 217). In addition to the main temple, there is a Birth House and a Shrine to Hathor, both of which date to the Roman period.
