Disha is a real sweet and passionate young woman. Very knowledgeable about her topic. It was an interesting approach for our LGBT group. I loved going to a temple where a god(ess) is worshipped by transgender people. Just had occasionally a hard time hearing the very interesting explanations because the background noise from the city covers Disha’s sweet voice!

Disha was fantastic! She was extremely knowledgeable about queer history in India as well as its current status legally, politically and culturally. Her English was excellent so easy to ask questions and engage in deeper conversations about living as queer people with family and professionally in India. She was also friendly, engaging and gave us fun experiences at local queer-friendly watering holes and gathering places along with deeper history of living as queer people in Mumbai. Particularly moving was her taking us to temple begun for inclusion of queer people including being operated by transgender people whom we met and could ask questions. Using the train was also a really fun local experience. This was truly a deep dive into the LGBTQI experience in India far beyond my expectations. Thank you!!

Disha gave our group a very interesting and informative “gay tour” of “gay Mumbai”. She told us about the Iranis (a term used for Zoroastrians in Mumbai who arrived in India in the 19th century) who came to India in the late 19th and early 20th century, and many of them opened restaurants. Our “gay” tour started and ended in two such restaurants which were a place for gay people to discretely meet each other safely and inconspicuously. These restaurants encouraged everyone to share tables together, and so gay people could meet one another and sit at a table there and chat with an unknown person without raising any questions about why they were talking to some unidentified man. It was the Indian precursor to a gay bar, and the gay scene seems still pretty under the radar even here in Mumbai! We also visited Mumbai’s only open shrine to an openly transgender saint. Trans and gay people here have to generally keep a low profile here due to enduring discrimination. However, many Hindus commonly worship various Hindu deities connected with gender diversity such as Ardhanarisvara (the androgynous form of Shiva and his consort Parvati), Aravan (a hero whom the god Krishna married after becoming a woman), and Harihara (an incarnation of Shiva and Vishnu). Not surprisingly the stringent anti-gay laws came along with adoption of the British legal system. Gay people have always been around no matter what some people seem to think!

Disha and her team gave a brilliant tour of gay cultural sights in Mumbai. We experienced many fascinating venues of everyday life that included visiting a Temple dedicated to Transgendered people and receiving a blessing , taking the train and enjoying a refreshment at local establishments. Lots of great historical and current information was shared. Highly recommend.

Disha took us on an experience we’ll never forget. Not only were she and her team knowledgeable, they were passionate, welcoming, and funny. They explained the rich queer history of India and Mumbai, and brought us to places tourists typically would not see. Disha’s passion and insight meant a lot to everyone on the tour.

Disha, my No Footprints guide on the Queer Day Out tour of Mumbai, was excellent. Well informed & able to talk about the LTBTQ+ history of Mumbai in a inclusive and knowageable way. As a solo traveller, Disha made me feel totally at ease and safe, and I discovered so much I didn't know. The highlight was a visit to the Transcafe where we were welcomed so warmly. Highly recommend this tour to fellow LGBTQ+ visitors to Mumbai.

I absolutely loved every second of this experience and would highly recommend to anyone wondering what queer life in Mumbai is like. The highlight was of course visiting the Hijra temple and getting to ask them questions and learn more about their lives and role in the city. You get access to communities that you couldn’t get on your own making it a truly special experience. Himanshu was a wonderful and friendly guide who was very open and easy to talk to. They were also able to accommodate me on a solo tour at the last minute, and I’m glad I didn’t miss it!
