Pass By: R. Dr. Coelho de Carvalho 8, 8400-258 Ferragudo, Portugal

The Fort of São João do Arade, sometimes referred to as the Castle of Arade, is a medieval fortification. The first fortification on the site consisted of a watch tower erected in the reign of King John II of Portugal. Later, following the settlement of Ferragudo (around 1520), it is believed that the castle was encircled by a defensive wall (built on the rudimentary walls of the older walls).
The origins of the Fort of Arade date back to the Philippine Dynasty, to defend the coast of the peninsula from attacks by pirates and privateers in service to the Crowns of northern Europe.

Pass By: Ponta do Altar Lighthouse, Ferragudo Portugal

The lighthouse, of unusual design, consists of a small square turret attached to a one-story caretaker's house. It supports a red lantern on its terrace. The house, often compared with the appearance of a small schoolhouse, is painted white, with exposed stones and a red tiled roof. It is located on a promontory, used since prehistory for pagan rituals, on the eastern side of the entrance to the port of Portimão.
The Ponta do Altar Lighthouse was first proposed by Ricardo Peyroteu on June 21, 1884. It started operations of 1 January 1893. The tower is 10 meters high and 2.7 meters wide. The original light was white and used oil as the fuel source. It combined with two smaller lights at the ends of the two moles at the entrance to Portimão harbour.

Pass By: Leixão das Gaivotas, 8400, Portugal

This small islet, with an area of just 0.16 ha, is classified as IBA
(Important Bird Area), due to its importance as nesting site for ardeids (herons).
This place is especially interesting during spring, due to the existence of a colony of Cattle Egrets and Little Egrets - at this time of year the top of the islet is full of white dots, which are the herons in their nests.

Pass By: Torre da lapa, 8500-668 Portimão, Portugal

Torre da Lapa was perhaps built in the 16th century as part of the watchtower system that helped defend the Algarve coast.
For hundreds of years, up there, the men from the neighborhood took turns watching the coast, always keeping an eye on the boats of corsairs, mostly from North Africa. In case of danger, it was also up there that a bell was rung, smoke signals were made or, at night, a fire was lit, so that people had time to put their possessions and lives in a safe place.

Stop At: Farol de Alfanzina, 8400 Carvoeiro, Portugal

One of the deepest caves in this area. Entering it is amazing! Only possible when weather conditions are favourable.

Duration: 3 minutes

Stop At: Algar de Benagil, Cm1154 Praia de Benagil, Benagil, Lagoa 8400 Portugal

Algar de Benagil is one of the most widespread places when the subject is the Algarve beaches, including the international press. No surprises, this beach / cave is incredibly beautiful. Whenever the conditions are favourable, we will enter it. Prepare your camera!

Captain and his mate Philip were excellent hosts, very attentive and helpful, especially for my mum who is infirm, they were very funny and explained a lot of the things we saw on out trip, added bonus was not adding to pollution with the solar boat.

We had a lovely trip to view the stunning coastline from Portimão to the Benagil cave. The boat was clean and quiet, there were no fuel fumes and the crew were so friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this tour business and will definitely book another trip with them next time we visit Algarve

Pedro/Antonio were informative/friendly. Their solar powered catamaran was a smooth ride, dry with no petro exhaust fumes. We could also move around and sit/lay on the front deck/nose of the boat. On the small dinghies/powerboats we could see that people were wet and those boats crashed hard on small waves. Although those smaller craft could enter the caves further their rough ride would have destroyed my back, and with cramped quarters I would have been wet and uncomfortable. I would recommend that anyone older than 50, ladies or well dressed would enjoy the catamaran better. Saving a couple euros isn’t worth comfort.

Booking this tour was quick and easy with instant confirmation via email. Very easy to find the pier in Portimao, parking 1 was the closest and free if you navigate to rua simao correia, pier M is just around the corner of the orange building Hotel resort. The sun boat was very clean and tidy, Pedro and the captain were excellent and very experienced, very friendly. The catamaran had plenty of space and was not over crowded at all, 18 to 20 people on board max. Toilets on board and you can buy drinks if you fancy. The boat was powered by solar and battery, it was very quiet and a very smooth ride. Its August so we booked the 6pm evening 2.5 hour tour with the sunset on your return, we left on time and along the way stopped at different caves and passed by many praia beaches until we reached Benagil. We went all the way in as close as possible to shore. Very picturesque along the cliffs and its very relaxing on the front of the catamaran on the sun beds. Take some drinks and food with you and enjoy the views of cliffs and the ocean. Perfect time to go to avoid alot busy crowds, kayakers, swimmers etc as I'm sure you'll hear or see how busy these areas get. If you want a lovely, peaceful relaxing time on catamaran then book this trip with sunboat. I found it on whim through quick Google search, read some reviews and booked it because quite frankly I had my wife and small kids, we didn't want the thrill of crashing waves cramped on speed boats and having to wear life jackets holding on to dear life and best of all this was eco friendly! See the pictures, I think you'll find it very hard to get a picture of benagil with no one inside as we did.
