Highly recommend. Jon is the Basque equivalent to an "All American Boy". This is clearly his home turf, he knows everyone! We did the pintxos tour AND the hiking tour and would recommend both! If you've been to San Sebastian before, I'd do the hiking tour instead of the pintxos. If you haven't been to San Sebastian before, I'd do both, or if pressed for time, do the pintxos tour! Jon is a wealth of knowledge!

Our tour with Jon was the best! He was engaging and kept things fun while making it educational. This tour includes lots of elements- a tour of the towns/beach, market, a winery, and a little bit of lite hiking. The best way to spend a day exploring the region!

An experience that brings together wine and the outdoors - what's not to love!? We had an amazing experience on this tour with Jon. He was an engaging local host who brought us to his hometown up a portion of the Camino de Santiago to a Txakoli winery. His stories and history were interesting, the views looked like art, and the wine was delicious. I walked away from this experience with a new found love for tinned anchovies! Thank you for a wonderfully cool experience!

We had a wonderful time with Jon! He sure knows his way around the area, being from Zarautz, and is very knowledgeable about the history of this superb Basque region. He was very happy to answer all our questions with a neverending smile and contagious humor! We recommend this tour without hesitation!

Jon’s day trip was one of the best experiences I had while in the Basque region as his tailored hike brings you through the place he was raised and the community that he calls home. It is personal, so much so, he seemed like the town’s mayor respectfully and candidly interacting with kin and merchants alike. We started the trek with a quick train ride to his coastal hometown in Zarautz, which was wonderful. After walking by the beach, we walked through a Roman path and the views! He was patient on the way up as it is a lil hike, and the views were spectacular. Following that we spent some time in a winery for some appetizers and the effervescent Txacoli from the region. Lastly, we made it down to the incredible small town of Getaria known for its grilled seafood, and birthplace of the Magellan explorer Juan Sebastián Elcano and fashion icon, Cristóbal Balenciaga. The museum in town was awesome, BTW. 10/10 would absolutely do again.

Amazing day spent hiking, enjoying a stunning winery, and learning about the area from a local. We were wondering about the difficulty of the hike, but as the elders of the group (early 60’s—in decent shape), we did fine. We definitely wouldn’t have found these places on our own… Eskerrik asko Jon!

The Playa de Zarautz was gorgeous. We took a photo, but otherwise hurried past the beautiful, empty beach to the village. We had "tapas" outside the market on a little cocktail table. It was a 2" piece of bread with cheese and a cube of apple jelly. Cider tasted like vinegar to many. The description said easy walking tour; the uphill Roman path of cobbles and boulders on the Camino de Santiago portion was difficult, even for active adults. Nothing to hold on to, a very steep incline. The warm sunny weather and little access to water made it worse. The tour max is listed as 9 people; we had 17 in our group, all over 55 years old, and not all were in the best physical condition for this level of hiking. Someone could have tripped, fallen or had a medical emergency and there was not much around if that happened. There is also steep declines as you get to the coastal town. The tour guide was at the front for the hike/walk. Our guide didn't explain the significance of the Camino de Santiago, or much about the area we walked or the towns we passed through. We stood by a winery, but never entered or toured the inside or ate their local products. No tiramisu! The harvest was taking place, and the winery truck drivers and workers were not happy so see us resting at the entrance. The views were spectacular, if you were able to redirect your focus and concern for tripping or falling. Its a long way up from the beach, as you will realize, and a long way back down. We had a snack at a winery restaurant in Getaria, three wines tasted, bread and anchovies. Not enough chairs for all 17 to sit. I think the owner was not expecting that many of us. The tour ended at that point. The cost of $140 per person seemed high compared to other walking tours on easier terrain. (Our group had lunch at a nice family restaurant in Getaria, arranged and paid separate from the tour.) Be sure to read the fine print for this tour: "Not recommended for travelers with back problems. Not recommended for pregnant travelers. No heart problems or other serious medical conditions. Travelers should have a moderate physical fitness level." If it was an easy walking, why the warnings?
