Itinerary
This is a typical itinerary for this product

Stop At: Santo Domingo, Antioquia, Colombia

The day starts at your doorstep when we pick you up. Then we start our journey to north of Medellin, just 1 hour away through beautiful sceneries.

Once we arrive we are welcomed by Oscar the cacao farmer and he will walk us through the plantation to see the cacao plants in their natural form as well as other natural local products like tangerine trees, coffee plants, plantain trees and more.

Then we plant cacao seeds to show you the timeline and after that we start picking cacao fruits from the trees.

Once we've picked enough we head back to the farm for the next step: fermenting.

To ferment the cacao, we need to cut the fruit and extract the seeds. You also get a chance to try the raw chocolate fruit which is deliciously sweet.

Once we’ve opened the fruit, we pour the seeds into wooden containers. After fermenting, the cacao then needs to be dried.

To dry the fermented cacao, we use a green house called Marquesina for around 2 days (depending on the weather).

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Santo Domingo, Antioquia, Colombia

After drying, the cacao is then ready to be roasted.

On our farm, we roast the chocolate in a very artisanal way, using a simple pot on a wood fire, that, after stirring it for about 30 minutes, gives it an amazing subtle woody flavor.

After roasting the cacao beans, we remove the husk and manually separate them.

Once the beans are husk-free they are ready to be ground and melted.

At this point, we can add in some natural seeds to give the chocolate different premium flavors.

Natural flavors we might add include: orange dried-skin, sugar cane, coffee, quinoa and ginger.

Have an idea for a new chocolate flavor? We're always experimenting with new combinations, so let us know and we'll test it out.

As a result of the friction from the artisanal grinder, the cacao beans melt, leaving us with our final product: a fresh delicious premium chocolate mixed with your favourite ingredient grown organically in the farm.

You can buy these products for a very fair price at the farm.

Duration: 4 hours

Stop At: Copacabana, Antioquia, Colombia

The coffee tour takes place in a beautiful family farm that produces around 1 ton of coffee a year.

We will have a traditional delicious lunch to have energy to start learning everything about the coffee production.

The coffee expert will give you a thorough explanation about the coffee industry to have more context.

Then we start planting a coffee seed and trying the bean as a fruit, you'll be surprised of how sweet they actually are.

Later on, we begin to pick some coffee in the plantation and to enjoy the breathtaking views.

Once the picking is done we need to process it step by step until its roasted and ground.

We will also have as many cups as you want as we explain where in the mouth you should put the coffee to taste it in a more professional way.

In conclusion, this Chocolate & Coffee experience is an unforgettable one, full of new friends, delicious organic products and the best memories of your trip in Colombia.

Laura was the perfect guide for the coffee and cacao tour. She was patient and took the time to explain every detail. Her knowledge of both coffee and cacao was impressive. We couldn’t have asked for a better guide. I highly recommend booking a tour with her.

This was hands down one of the best tours I have been on. Andres was an excellent host. He picked us up promptly in an air conditioned van and we learned so much from him! We did both the coffee and cacao farm tour and both were incredible experiences of a lifetime. The families that shared their land and time with us exuded generosity. Andres is an excellent story teller. He is SO passionate about coffee farming especially and it shows through his vibrant stories. Overall our group has the best time. All of us couldn’t stop talking about how memorable this experience one. Andres was also kind enough to take so many pictures of us using his phone and he sent to us afterwards. Don’t hesitate to book!! 10000/10!

The entire tour of both fincas (farms) was amazing! This was definitely one of the biggest highlights of our Colombia trip. Laura was an excellent guide for the entire trip. Very knowledgeable about the city of Medellín as well as coffee and chocolate production. She made sure we were comfortable the entire way and made sure everyone was taken care of. Could not recommend her more; really wonderful human. The fincas had beautiful views. That alone might have been worth the trip. What also made it great, was getting to meet locals and witnessing their daily lifestyle. They were incredibly welcoming, humble, and willing to teach us. Jose was super knowledgeable and had everything ready to go. It was great learning about the coffee making process. Picking our own and tasting the final product was awesome! Sandra and her family blew us away with a walk through the jungle picking cacao fruit, providing a great place to relax and eat lunch, and taking us through the chocolate making process. Tasting the different cacao fruits was something we wont forget! Honestly a great all around experience! Just go!

Our chocolate and coffee-making tour was nothing short of amazing! The ride, views, and overall vibe were fantastic. Our first stop was the bean to bar chocolate making experience where Sara, Geronimo, Alicia and Efren welcomed us to their wonderful home. They guided us through every step, from picking cacaos to molding our chocolate bars. It was hands-on, informative, and filled with delightful conversations, not to mention the delicious lunch that left us wanting more! Everything was so perfect, we didn’t want to leave but had to go to the next part of our trip. Next stop was another 15 minute drive up the mountains (kudos to Andres’ driving skills!) to Anna and Jose’s home with breathtaking views. They welcomed us with a refreshing lemonade and then started the work where we picked and went through the process of separating the meat of the fruit from the pits which then gets dried under the sun and then roasted. Of course, we had to reward ourselves with a cup or two of coffee after! A huge thank you to Andres for his hospitality, humor, patience, knowledge, and even playing DJ. This experience is truly one for the books!

I’m going to start with a bold statement. Out of all the travel-related tours we’ve done across several countries over the years, this was the best experience we’ve ever had. Sarah was our guide, but it felt more like reconnecting with an old friend. From pickup to drop off, we were welcomed and treated like family. The same is true with the families at the farms which were warm and welcoming… lots of friendly laughs and excitement in sharing their lives with us. We were beyond gracious of their time. One thing worth mentioning that I feel should be celebrated, is that women were leading everything. From leading the tour to roasting coffee beans for the entire village and even bringing out a machete so we can try fresh cacao, this was special and not lost on my wife and I. I should also mention that Sarah was very clear on timelines and what to expect without us having to ask. We were able to enjoy the tour with our full attention and not once had to worry about anything. We hope to have the opportunity to revisit with friends. Loved everything about this tour! -Ray & Val

The coffee and cacao tour exceeded our expectations completely, Sara is a great tour guide. We loved the fact that we visited small local farms, and that the tours are helping them buy things for their business too. Sara was really passionate and knowledgeable about not just the coffee and cacao, but also Colombian culture in general which made the day extra special. She also made us feel less like tourists on a commercialised tour and more like we were getting to experience life with the farms and families for a day. Couldn’t recommend this tour enough!

This Coffee and Cacao - Two Farms tour with Sarita is a true gem that you should definitely try! We have just returned from it and are overflown with positive emotions! It's more than just an agri tour. Sarita was able to open a window for us into real Colombia, with wonderful people who work on small authentic farms, beautiful nature and unbelievable flavors. She is very passionate and knowledgeable about both coffee and cacao. We learned a lot about coffee and were able to produce our own chocolate flavours. Thanks to Medellin Day Trips for organizing the tour and supporting small local farmers. They are amazing and friendly people who love what they do and we really enjoyed spending time with them.

Sara was the best tour guide! She was extremely knowledgable about the coffee and chocolate making process, and translated with us with the families when needed. She answered all of our questions and accomodated our dietary preferences with no problem at all, and made the entire tour a seamless, fun highlight of our trip to Colombia! Highly recommend booking this tour

What a fabulous tour. Sarita is an excellent tour guide, very informative and eager to share all of her knowledge and history on Colombia. The experience of being able to get outside of the city and into the montañas tranquilas was amazing. The views, the vegetation, the wildlife is all spectacular. The families are very welcoming and so friendly , eager to communicate and share their homes with strangers. The tour was well worth the price and only wish we could have spent even more time with Sarita talking about Colombia. The next time we are in Medellin we will be sure to book another tour with her.
