Visit: Tablao Flamenco El Arenal, Calle Rodo 7 Barrio del Arenal, 41001 Seville Spain

Visit Seville’s premier flamenco joint, Tablao El Arenal, in the historic El Arenal neighborhood where many of the city’s cultural attractions are located. Founded in 1975, the establishment is renowned throughout town as the best place to see an authentic Andalusian flamenco show, having built an impressive reputation from its owner’s expertise – the locally famed bailor (flamenco dancer) Curro Vélez.

Choose between three different packages for your evening of flamenco at Tablao El Arenal: show with a drink, show with tapas or show with a 3-course dinner (please see below for a sample menu). Head inside the bar, and then sit down to enjoy the show!

During the 75 minutes performance, watch up to 15 of Seville’s best bailors dance an intense flamenco, exuding their passion for this flamboyant form of art. Expressing Spanish gypsy culture through spellbinding choreography, the flamenco is performed to music from the venue’s guitar players and singers. Clap along and soak up the atmosphere inside this legendary flamenco haven.

Flamenco is one of the prominent signatures that Spain has to offer. While options of catching it are plenty, you can not go wrong by getting the basics right. Being a purist at heart, wanted to experience it at it's birthplace. Hence selected one of the oldest taverns at Seville, in operation for over a century. Readers of my earlier reviews know that culture and food form two fundamental pillars of my travel interest. Chse to have dinne,r to have an easier introduction to a formal Spanish meal. The meal was really nice, unlike a lot of places, where they often try to cut corners, hoping to make up with the show alone. Both the spread and raise was sumptuous. Even the wine was of very decent quality, at that piece point. Service was nice only the English language skills of the wait staff could've been better, but that's a generic problem in the country. Perhaps it's being a rich and proud culture, adequate care is not accorded to offer languages. Enough of backgraund let's get into the brass tracks. You'd do well to reach the venue a little early to take in the place. It is a short walk from the road beside the river in a small but intimate lane that has retained its conival spirit in these days of all pervasive media. There's a theory that Flamenco was carried by Roma people who came in from the East (India?). Am not expert of dance forms but two things struck me straight. One the spiritual aspect of this very physical form quite like our Kathak or Bharatnatyam. The other is the influencers of Dervish and similar elements it picked up from the journey. Simplicity of the accompaniments or the very lack of it, forces you to concentrate hard on the expressions, as they tell you the story. Here i would have preferred to be given a little background on what was being presented. There were four sketches in the show, an introduction would have helped us to appreciate it better. In it's vibrancy or flamboyance, it comes close to Samba at Platforma of Rio, is roots with Kathak , an Indian face form, that's also based on rhythmic patterns generated by for tapping. Here the expressions are volatile but still very graceful. The tempo is infectious and you get into foot tapping without realising how difficult it can be. Once the music steps you appreciate the dedication and years of practice that goes into the dancers. Another very Oriental trait that struck me was the high level of humility the artists exhibited. Was reminded of an anecdote where one of my friend went to learn Latin percussion from a Master. His first lesson was to try becoming a good human being, even before trying to be a good musician. The energy was real and palpable only our bottoms are not used to rickety seats with zero cushioning for around 2 hours these days. They groan as you head back often playing a time of their own. A must do for sure. Booking well in advance helps you to get seats at the front but as the room is compact, there's not much of a difference. By the way photography is banned inside the Tablo, so social media natives and doing innovative.

The dancers, singers, and musician were incredible. We were fortunate to get a stage side table which made their performance all the more memorable. Our food selection was not the best. However, the other patrons seemed to be enjoying their meals.

As a newcomer to flamenco, I wasn't sure what to anticipate, but I was truly amazed. The passion, rhythm, creativity, craftsmanship, and drama were exceptional, making it a spectacular show. I found myself speechless at times, completely captivated. 10/10 would recommend this unforgettable experience in beautiful Seville, especially with the dinner and show option.
