Stop At: Escaleras Electricas De La Comuna 13, Carrera 110, Medellin Colombia

Our Graffiti Tour in Medellin in Comuna 13 is definitely a must do activity when you come to Medellin
The violent past, the beautiful present and the promising future of this district makes it a magical place and an unforgettable experience.

The street art throughout the whole neighborhood makes it more mind blowing knowing that most of them have a special meaning related to its history.

You get inside in one of those neighborhoods in Comuna 13, the most dangerous Comuna in Medellin only 18 years ago.

Outdoor Escalators in our Graffiti Tour in Medellin:
Comuna 13 is the place where the first non-touristy outdoor electrical escalators in the world were installed.

The escalators were opened in December of 2011 with a cost of 3,5 million dollars and was built to save more than 350 stairs in a very steep hill.

Duration: 2 hours

Stop At: Comuna 13 Tours, San Javier, Medellín, San Javier, Medellin, Antioquia, Colombia

More than 15 meaningful graffitis to learn about
Half of the neighborhood displays meaningful graffiti and you get the chance to learn all their meanings at this incredible Graffiti Tour in Medellin.

Throughout the walk in Comuna 13 we invite you to try the traditional ice cream from this area as well as to have an amazing single origin coffee.

And who knows if we are lucky we might find some of the artists responsible for this pieces of art.

In our walk you visit the view point, the new pathway full of graffiti and the slide built to honor a tragedy occurred in Comuna 13.

There is a particular monument that was built to honor all the children of Comuna 13 and we’ll use it to revive our inner children and have some fun.

This 3-hour tour will definitely give you a taste of everything we were, we are and a clue of what we will be as a city.

Duration: 1 hour

Stop At: Centro Comercial Premium Plaza, Cra 43A Con Cll 30, Medellin Colombia

Second Part: Playing Tejo

We will be playing Tejo in a nice place in El Poblado.

Tejo is the Colombian national sport, but much more than that, it is a fun activity that can be played with relative ease by adults and kids alike.

The drive from Comuna 13 to the Tejo place is around 20 minutes.

Once we get to the place we start giving you the instructions on how to play it.

The Graffiti Tour and Tejo includes 1 hour of playing Tejo.

As well as beer, cocktails or food depending on the number of people attending the tour.

Duration: 30 minutes

Stop At: Centro Comercial Premium Plaza, Cra 43A Con Cll 30, Medellin Colombia

How Should the Tejo Be Played?

The setup is pretty simple: there’s a wooden box (called a “pitch”) that’s 35” x 40” and filled with clay. In the middle of the pitch is a metal circle.

Here, four packets of gunpowder (called “mechas”) are arranged at the North, South, East and West points of the metal circle.

There is also a backstop, but if you hit it when you throw any points that you receive are voided.

The goal is to throw your metal puck (called a Tejo) onto one of the mechas so it explodes against the metal ring.

You score even more points if you land your tejo in the center of the ring.

There are many reasons why this is a must-do in Medellin:

It’s fun
It’s authentic
The atmosphere is great
You work out your arms as you need to be tossing a 1-2 kg stone from 10-18 meters.

After one hour of enjoying Tejo we head back to your place with a smile and unforgettable memories.

This tour was a lot of fun for our whole family (3 kids ranging in age from 3 to 9). Erika, our guide, was so kind, informative and helpful. She tailored the tour every step of the way to what worked for our family and was always mindful of how the kids were doing. It made a huge difference; she was patient, flexible and fun - the kids enjoyed being with her. The artwork and community in Comuna 13 was fascinating to see & appreciate - the kids also enjoyed the slides & escalators. It did get pretty crowded as we were leaving, so we were glad that Erika took us early in the morning. Playing tejo will be a definite highlight of our trip - we all loved it; especially the kids (we modified the rules for them a bit). They had so much fun and we had lots of laughs - we recommend it!!

Love the tour of Comuna 13 and our private guide Erika was fabulous! Learned so much history and was able to really be immersed in the community by meeting local artists, witnessing street performers, and taking in the sights was truly amazing. One of the best tours I’ve taken.

Great tour, really enjoyed it and learned a lot about Medellin and Colombia in the process. We were with kids (8&4) and they really enjoyed it too. Was also easy to arrange with next day pick up at our hotel. Would recommend.

This Comuna 13 Graffiti tour has given me valuable insights in the troubled past of these ever-expanding San Javier neighbourhoods and it has taught me about the positive changes and the blossoming seeds of hope for a better future for these people. My guide Daniel was very knowledgeable about the history and the current positive evolution forward of this comuna. He is also a great person who shares his mind, insights and heart, which is invaluable. We also went off the beaten touristic path for a while, wandering around in what we could describe as dire living circumstances, which allowed me to expand my mind about a raw reality that was abstract to me. Thank you very much for this highly recommendable experience. My excursions with Andres and his team have provided me with so many unforgettable memories. Not only are they highly proficient in everything they do, they really put their minds, and even more importantly, their hearts into it, which makes all the difference. Communication is always so easy, warm and kind. It has been a distinct pleasure to have been able to experience some of the marvellous sights Medellín (and its surroundings) has to offer, with them by my side. I'm already looking forward to going on new adventures with them, next time I'm in Medellín. (I even registered an account on Tripadvisor, just so I could write the reviews they deserve)

I felt like I was hanging out with a girlfriend all the while exploring the beautiful city of Medellin. We covered all of the major highlights and I learned so much about Medellin in one day. I highly recommend this tour, I promise you will not be disappointed.

We had an amazing time on this trip. We were a family of 5 (three kids under 10) and went on the graffiti tour and then also did a hike outside of town. The tour guide was friendly and great with the kids. Highly recommend!

Henry was a fantastic guide! My Spanish is not very good, but he was also fluent in English, which made everything simple. I was picked up right on time from the lobby in my hotel. He was very knowledgeable on the history of La Comuna 13 and it was obvious he knew his way around very well. The locals were also friendly and welcoming. I opted for the early pickup (7am). I’m glad I did, as there were no crowds or lines to deal with. We were able to casually stroll through the community without feeling rushed to take pictures or skip over anything.

We did the Flower Farm + Guatape Rock & Colorful Town Tour and it was such a treat! Our tour guide's name was Erika and she picked us up in Sabaneta. We then drove to Santa Helena to a GORGEOUS flower farm. The owners of the farm were such a kind family who welcomed us with open arms. We then drove to El Penol for a quick history lesson and to climb la pierda. Lastly we stopped by El Pueblo de Zocales where Erika handled everything and we were able to go off and explore on our own for a bit. We tried the best chocolate and cotton candy (that she was kind enough to purchase for us). It was an amazing day and it wouldn't have been so great without Erika's kind spirit.
