Itinerary

Stop At: Ejipura, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India
Ejipura slums is perhaps Bengaluru's largest. The challenges of poor infrastructure, unchecked development, and large scale urban migration come to focus here. Poverty and associated effects are all around.
Yet, this is also a place where the human spirit triumphs over adversity.
We will stop at the Swabhimaan community center - where children of all ages from the neighborhood come for curricular tuitions and after school programs. You will meet the teachers and volunteers working hard to improve student performance.
We will then stop at the Swabhimaan Clinic - where doctors consult and distribute medicines for an all inclusive price of Rs. 10 (12 cents) per visit.
Finally we will stop by at the Swabhimaan grocery distribution center where free staples are served to the most in need.
A Swabhimaan volunteer will walk you through the sites. All proceeds are given back to people in the community through Swabhimaan Trust, a non-profit working in Ejipura since 2002

I met my host, Ashif, in front of the passport office as instructed. We headed from there across the street into Ejipura, where we were greeted by Swabhimaan's (the NGO's) founder, Venkatraman. It seemed as if he knew everyone in the area, and you can tell that he is well-liked and respected. He showed me the medical clinic, the food distribution area, the area where hot meals are distributed, where school takes place, and I got to meet a wonderful group of women healthcare leaders. Along the way, he explained about life in the slums and how his NGO is striving to help people better their situations through better healthcare, education, skills, and microloans. As someone who has a BS in Human Development and is getting ready to graduate from nursing school, this tour was amazing and gave me a lot of food for thought.
Don't take this tour to gawk at the people and their condition of living. Use it as a learning experience to expand your horizons, and definitely come with an open mind.

It was a good experience that we could see the real life of poor people. At first we were a little nervous about walking through the slam area but the guide told us that they are very friendly and the area is safely managed. Thanks to the guide, we could concentrate on waching housings and could understand how people play great roles in the community.
We surely recommend you join this tour.

The entire tour was very interesting. The guide was a very friendly and he guided perfect through the slum and explained a lot. He asked after personal wishes. The mostly wonderful was to visit a school project and talking to the children from different classes The children were so cute and curious and we spoke in English about India and Germany. It was very heartwarming and one of the best memories of my journey. Thank you very much. I recommend this Tour everybody!

We are so glad that we booked this trip. Conditions in the slums are very tough, but seeing the projects that are aiming to give people a fairer chance was truly uplifting. A workshop providing work for disabled people, a health clinic, a computer room and library for school children, day care for pre school children and women past working age, support to schools, collecting unused lunches from businesses to provide free meals, and more.
All safely and informatively guided by Ashif, and the project's inspiration, Venkat.
Please consider taking this excellent tour.

I saw a small part of a slum. Unfortunataly the trip was very short, i think its better to make this trip longer, as now, but i recommend it, because you will see, how the poor people live. Also you have a insight in a school project. For me was all intesting to see. Thanks Venkat for gave this trip.
