Lake Ashinoko (芦ノ湖, Ashinoko) was formed in the caldera of Mount Hakone after the volcano's last eruption 3000 years ago. Today, the lake with Mount Fuji in the background is the symbol of Hakone. The lake's shores are mostly undeveloped except for small towns in the east and north and a couple of lakeside resort hotels.
The best views of the lake in combination with Mount Fuji can be enjoyed from Moto-Hakone (a few steps south from the sightseeing boat pier), from the Hakone Detached Palace Garden and from the sightseeing boats cruising the lake.

Stop At: Hakone Shrine / Kuzuryu Shrine Singu, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun 250-0522 Kanagawa Prefecture
Hakone Shrine (箱根神社, Hakone Jinja) stands at the foot of Mount Hakone along the shores of Lake Ashi. The shrine buildings are hidden in the dense forest, but are well advertised by its huge torii gates, one standing prominently in the lake and two others over the main street of Moto-Hakone.
A path leads from the torii gate in Lake Ashi up a series of steps flanked by lanterns through the forest to the main building of the shrine, which sits peacefully among the tall trees. The shrine is beautiful throughout the year, and is particularly breathtaking when shrouded in mist.
A second shrine, Mototsumiya ("original shrine") stands at the summit of Komagatake, one of Mount Hakone's multiple peaks. It is accessible by the Hakone Komagatake Ropeway from Hakone-en or via hiking trails.

The Hakone Ropeway (箱根ロ－プウエイ) is part of the Hakone Round Course, a popular way to visit Hakone. It connects Sounzan Station (at the terminus of the Hakone Tozan Cablecar) with Togendai Station (at the shore of Lake Ashinoko) and stops at Owakudani and Ubako stations on the way. The ropeway is fully covered by the Hakone Free Pass.
The ropeway's gondolas depart every minute and fit around ten people each. Traveling the full length of the ropeway takes around 30 minutes. Along the journey, passengers can enjoy views of the active, sulfuric hot spring sources of the Owakudani Valley between Sounzan and Owakudani and of Lake Ashinoko and Mount Fuji between Owakudani and Togendai if visibility allows. A transfer of gondolas is necessary at Owakudani, but no transfer is needed at Ubako.

Stop At: The Hakone Open-Air Museum, 1121 Ninotaira, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun 250-0493 Kanagawa Prefecture
The Hakone Open-Air Museum is the first open-air art museum in Japan, built in Hakone with the aim of harmonizing nature and art. Art works are placed everywhere on the vast site of about 70,000 square meters, surrounded by beautiful trees, grass, and moutains.
It can be enjoyed by a wide range of ages, from families with children to adults traveling alone.

Stop At: Owaku-dani Valley, 1251 Sengokuhara, Hakone-machi, Ashigarashimo-gun 250-0631 Kanagawa Prefecture
Owaku-dani is an active volcano that powers the hot springs in the local area. Take the ropeway over the volcano to the observatory to learn about this important volcano and try one of the black boiled eggs said to bring long life!

This private tour is a walking day tour with meet up in Hakone. A private vehicle is not included. Public transportation or local taxis maybe used to transfer between sites. Exact transportation costs can be discussed with the guide after a reservation is finalized. Please have Japanese Yen on hand for your transportation costs. If you wish to arrange for a private vehicle, please contact us directly. All Private vehicles must be booked 5 days in advance. Maximum number of passengers: 7.

Hiroki Morikawa was an amazing tour guide for our family with kids age range 5-9yo. He is a grandfather and was amazing with the children. He took us to Hakone ropeway, Lake Ashi, a store selling Japanese puzzle boxes, and Open Air Museum. He was so kind and friendly, especially with the children. Our kids said it was the best day ever. I would highly recommend Hiro for anyone, especially if traveling with children.

I want to express my gratitude to Hiro for his wisdom and care during our tour on May 10. The day before the tour, he reached out to us and confirmed our trip for the next day. He was there exactly at the time he promised along with the taxi driver and was very friendly. Within the first 5 minutes of knowing our guide, he became our friend and we knew we would have a great day. Hiro is an excellent, amazing, and phenomenal guide. He was very knowledgeable of every question we asked him, he taught us Japanese culture and language, and made us feel very comfortable the entire day. Hiro is an example to all tour guide on how to take care of your clients. We made memories that will last forever and are extremely grateful for Hiro and also for the Taxi driver that accompanied us during our day touring the Hakone region. We hope to meet again in the future.

We had an amazing experience with Yoshi. The weather was perfect so beautiful views of Mount Fuji. Yoshi was so insightful during different stops on our tour. Our trip was memorable.

Hiro was the most amazing guide. He took us to all the places we wanted to see even though it was raining heavily the whole day. He is very knowledgeable, flexible & a true gentleman. We highly recommend him.

Yusuke was a wonderful guide- beautifully navigating us through the various modes of transportation while giving us historical facts along the way. We had awesome views and memorable experiences- black egg and active volcano as part of that.

Taka took us on a wonderful trip experiencing the 5 Modes of transport , circle route from Gora to lake Ashi . On the way beautiful breath taking views of Mount Fuji . With a great sense of humour Taka explained everything and more in good english to make this a memorable experience

We had an incredible time with Yoshi-san last week on our trip to Hakone. He helped navigate our family smoothly around the perfect itinerary to entertain us all while providing great information! He had answers to the questions we had (such a wealth of knowledge) and anticipated needs and expertly got us back to our hotel in perfect timing for our taxi we had scheduled.
