This was a great day out. Garry was an excellent guide. We got amazing views of the coast, saw multiple craters and fissures (some really deep) and even got to climb down into a lava tube. The special treat was seeing 2 i’iwi! It was a pretty strenuous hike for someone getting up in years like myself. I was tired by the end, but it was definitely worth it.

I loved our guide and we learned so much. Beautiful views and doable hike! I loved the crater experience and the weather was perfect. I do feel that you need to be in pretty good shape to do the hike and also to climb in and out of the lava tube. Not for elderly!

Lovely hike on otherwise inaccessible privately owned lands. It was a reasonable pace uphill. Great views as we walked up the trail. Such interesting craters and a lava tube. Nick was very knowledgeable.

There's something unbelievably awe inspiring to be in a place so special to the Islands. Hiking along the crater edges of Hualalaī was magical - and a bit nerve wracking going across a few gorges and around some boulders - but the views and the feeling being in such a remote place was amazing. Eating a snack under a giant ohia tree, walking through the Koa forest, and crawling through an undisturbed lava tube were cherries on top of an incredible hike. Nick was a fantastic guide, enthusiastic about showing us the best parts this volcano has to show us (spoiler, everything about it was the best!). Thank you to HFT for the conscientious way you do this tour, allowing us to be able to visit such a special place!

Our guide was John and we had a great time with him. He is passionate about the island and offered great insight into the foliage, animals, history, geology, etc. It was hot and cold on the hike, so dress in layers. John offered walking sticks, and I suggest you take it. There are some steep parts where the stick really helps, like having a 3rd leg for balance. Beautiful views and a great day to be outside seeing a usually hidden (from most travelers) area of the island. After the hike, John had snacks for us too!

Nice hike but way way way more difficult than moderate as they list it as. Ten people on the tour and we all agreed with that. No one was prepared for the difficulty.

Our guide was passionate and experienced and really made this trip. You are above the clouds and the views are spectacular. It’s a hike but really feel any moderately in shape person can do it. The tour company is the best. Use them for any trip they offer.

Over several visits to the Big Island, we did all of the other major tours with HFT and this was the last one of their offerings. On their web site, they indicate this is a "moderate." I think this is accurate in that the hike was a bit more of a physical challenge than their other offerings - Volcano Unveiled and the Kohala Falls. Bringing good hiking shoes is a must and make sure you take a walking stick, even if you've never used one before. We were led by guides Taro and Nick. Taro moved like a squirrel and took care of all of us. The sights were great and I appreciated the appropriately spaced breaks in the walk up, around and down the volcano.

It was neat to see many craters and listen to Taro’s explanations about history of the volcanoes on the big island. Lava tube was good but short.Nick has a fun personality and pleasant to hike with.
