Going through depression due to losing my youngest son and Mother's Day just wasn't the same this year BUT going to Houmas House brought something out of me that needed to happen. TEARS! The enormous dedication to the breath taking grounds and the attention to detail brought me to tears. It's a very magical place and you must see it. Every corner you turn, mother nature just hugs you and shows you that there is beauty all around you. This place brought me so much joy on a day that I had none. Thank you Houmas House and staff for an Incredible unforgettable day! I will definitely return again some day.

We did the mothersday lunch buffet, and it was really good. For an outdoor buffet, the food was really good. I've been to the carriage house for lunch, and although a little pricey, the food has always been good here. Some of the best gumbo hands down. We took the mansion tour, which I've also taken before, and I prefer this one over Oak Alley as there is a lot more property original stuff here vs oak alley which is a lot of period correct stuff. Ruby was a fantastic guide. The gardens are beautiful. This place overall is one of the best experiences.

The house and the grounds are absolutely stunning. Ruby was an amazing tour guide and was extremely knowledgeable and personable. Dinner at the Carriage House was fantastic. Weekday afternoon, so it was not crowded or rushed at all. Would definitely visit again.

It's undeniable that the house & gardens are beautiful, and offer some wonderful photographic opportunities, particularly the majestic Burnside oak. I was taken aback, however, when our tour guide introduced himself and, almost in the same breath, said that slavery would not be the focus of the tour, or even discussed. It just doesn't sit right with me that this establishment, which once held more than 800 slaves in the 1850s & 1860s -- making it "the center of the largest slave holding in Louisiana," per the National Park Service -- does not want to even broach this aspect of its history. The Houmas House's website does not make this clear in its "Mansion" tour description. (In fact, if you're looking for mention of slavery on the website, you'll have to go digging for it under the About section, where you'll find one reference to the number of slaves held (150) that grossly differs from that reported by the NPS.) Our guide, though obviously very knowledgeable about the particulars of the mansion's decor and previous owners, came across as robotic and indifferent to our enjoyment of the interior spaces we were being shown. He rushed from one room to another without soliciting questions. When we paused in any of the rooms to take a few photos after he'd finished speaking, he would move on to the next room and continue his talking points even though we weren't physically present in the room with him. It was almost comical. Beyond all that, the check-in staff & gift shop cashier weren't very welcoming, despite being two of only a few visitors that Monday afternoon.

An hour's drive from bustling French Quarter. Beautiful gardens surround an interesting house full of history, old and more recent. Our guide, Ruby, was the personification of southern hospitality, wit and charm. She brought to life the varied transitions of the house and cultures. We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and grounds.

Sami did a wonderful job of guiding what was almost a personal tour of the Houmas Plantation (4 of us). Having read recently some of the history of the house, I knew that she knew what she was talking about. Nice young lady who did a professional job while being appropriately friendly and open with her clients. Her interest in history played well here.

Cheryl was our tour guide and she was very knowledgeable and kind. There were 4 of us on our tour and she took her time and allowed us to take pictures throughout the tour. Cheryl was happy to answer all of our questions about the beautiful Home and Gardens. We visited Oak Alley Plantation before Houmas House. Our visit to Houmas House was our favorite experience while visiting NOLA. If you are visiting the plantations, you won't want to miss Houmas. There's also a beautiful gift shop, restaurant and museum on the property.

The estate and grounds are are beautiful. There is no arguing that. However, I was disappointed and outraged that there was no mention of the contributions that black slaves made to the running of the estate. It is unlikely that Houma would be standing today without the contribution of Black people. In addition, there was barely any mention of how the property was acquired From indigenous peoples, except for a brief mention that it was purchased from them. I think it is the responsibility of establishments such as Houmas to tell and reveal the full history in all of its details no matter how painful it is. We owe this to Black Americans, and we owe this to the indigenous peoples of the United States. The museum was closed on the day that I went because of a wedding. It is quite possible that they make mention of these people and their contributions in the museum, but it was not mentioned on the tour.

This was by far the best tour we took on this trip. (Just for reference, we also toured Destrehan which was great and Oak Alley which was OK. Nottoway was basically not available and San Francisco was closed.) I cannot recommend Houmas House enough! The house itself was AMAZING and the tour was fabulous! The guide (who was very fun) clearly loved his job and was FULL of stories and details. My only minor complaint was I wish the tour were longer so we could hear more. However, most folks are going to be very pleased. We arrived around 4ish and didn't know what to expect....we were just hoping to see the house. We found out there were cottages and a restaurant on the premise. It turns out they did have a cottage available and signed us up for one night.....we were basically a "walk in" and they took great care of us. We decided to eat in the onsite restaurant and, again, the food was amazing. REALLY good and a good value too. When you go into the restaurant, you think you are going to have to dig really deep in your pockets because it is SO beautiful - but the value was good and the food was out of this world. Our waitress stopped eating her own meal to wait on us. We took her suggestions and are so glad we did! Did I mention the grounds? Wow! After signing in, we had the absolute friendliest lady, Sue, give us a ride on a golf cart also giving us a tour of the grounds. Clearly, the owner loves this place and it is infused with his spirit. Our stay was so wonderful, we came back for a second night! If you are in Louisianna, outside of New Orleans, do yourself a favor and spend some time at Houmas House. Maybe, if you're lucky, you will get to meet the owner, David. This delightful man will make your stay over the top special and memorable.
