Itinerary
Sail out on two separate trips to see the adorable puffins on the islands of Lundey and Akurey, and to search for whales, dolphins, and porpoises in the waters of Faxaflói Bay.
During your puffin tour your guide will tell you all about these fascinating birds. The two islands are known for their puffin populations in the summer, with an estimated 30,000 birds returning each year to lay nest during the summer months. As you draw closer to the islands, peer through a pair of the boat’s binoculars for a closer look at these seabirds as they dive into the sea for food. You may also spot northern fulmars, gulls, Arctic terns and black guillemots.
On your whale watching tour you will search for the four most commonly spotted species: humpback whales, minke whales, white-beaked dolphins and harbour porpoises. Pull on a pair of thermal overalls to shield you from the cold, and listen as your guide tells you all about the marine wildlife surrounding you. In the unlikely event that you don’t spot a whale, you will receive a complimentary ticket for another boat ride.
Please note: You can choose to do the tours on the same day, or on separate days during your vacation.

I did a combined tour of whales and puffins and I was not disappointed!! Our guides Massimiliano and Alice were outstanding!! They were so knowledgeable and you could tell they loved their jobs! We were able to see about 6 different species thanks to their teamwork. I had a wonderful time and would take this tour again!

A lot of fun. Unfortunately we did not see any whales, but we did see dolphins. The tour guide was very funny. We did see a lot of puffins on the second part of the tour. Definitely recommend.

The guides for both the whale watching tour and puffin cruise were incredibly knowledgeable and the boat captains were great at communicating with other tours to find as many whales/puffins as possible.

Our (puffin) guide, Patrick, was a hoot! I could have sworn he was from the US Midwest, because to me he had no accent. He was very funny while being informative as well. Saw lots of puffins. The whale watching was fantastic as well. Although we didn’t see any whales, we did see many dolphins and porpoises.

Both excursions were very disappointing. I saw only the fin of a dolphin; my husband saw nothing on the whale watch. A few people saw one or more minkes quite far away. My husband and I saw one supposed puffin flying -- hard to tell -- on the puffin watch. The boat was quite small, crammed full of people, some having to sit inside where it would probably be even harder to see any puffins if there had been any. The boat does not get close enough to the island.
We were there Aug. 14, and were told the puffins had been leaving. Whales, too?
No one said, or we didn't hear. The tour operators really should stop taking people out when the puffins and whales become so scarce. That would be the ethical thing to do. This was quite a waste of time and money.

Our guide Blanca was excellent at pointing out whales, dolphins, and birds. It was a very enjoyable trip.

Saw many dolphins and Minke whales (they're quite small so you only see them briefly break the surface.) Puffin cruise (1 hour total) to a small island was great--saw many adults and pufflings. Guide provided lots of interesting info.

Our tour guides were great! I will say, though, the puffin watching was much more exciting than the whale watching. This isn't anyone's fault, obviously, because whales are wild animals after all. The puffin watching wasn't more than an hour long, but the whale watching was 2.5 hours, and only until 2h in did we get any indication we would be seeing whales. The puffin watching boat was small and quaint, and our guide provided us with all the puffin facts! The whale watching boat was huge, and because we went farther out to sea, we were provided with optional sea-sickness pills (which I gladly took, just in case). I would recommend the puffin watching to all, the whale watching to some.

Really enjoyed the whale watching. Very good information about whales. We even saw whales!!
Puffin part was okay. Again interesting information but could only see puffins with binoculars. Boat was never close enough for a good view.
