Itinerary

Rome-based goldsmiths and jewelers, the Cassios had their workshop in the Trajan’s markets. It was here that in the 19th century they introduced the micro-mosaic pattern in the making of their valuables, thus pleasing and complying with the taste of the time. The workshop will begin with an introduction to Roman mosaic technique and history. Afterwards, you will practice the principles of texture, glass tile cutting to create your own silver jewel to take home. It is fundamental to us to transfer the real techniques of Roman Mosaic craft.

I did this experience with my 13 and 14 year old daughters. The studio was beautiful and busy, and learning about the process of doing mosaics and mini-mosaics was so interesting. We had a lovely time with the instructor who even offered us cappuccinos. We made beautiful necklaces and they placed them on high quality chains. The studio is located in an artsy neighborhood with lovely non-touristy restaurants and bistrots. Would recommend to visitors wanting to explore the art of the region.

The amount of information given about the subject, the history as to how it originally started and some of the artwork is also shown in very well known places and the restoration artwork for the Vatican.

What talented artisans who were so willing to share their craft and help me when I ran out of ability.

What a wonderful experience! If this shop offered 1-2 week or month long summer intensives I would be first to sign up! I learned about mosaic arts and explored my creativity with the help of some amazing shop artists. Juliana, who conducted our class, was patient, encouraging and warm. We sipped espresso while carefully placing our glass pieces into the jewerly. We listened to classical music and it was a delightful time! What a lovely way to spend a morning!

First of all, Juliana has a marvelous passion for mosaic and could not have been a more pleasant and welcoming teacher. What a lovely person. Her enthusiasm made my family very comfortable with our obvious lack of experience in micro-mosaic work. I wanted to set up an experience “off the beaten path” in Rome for our family, including our high school-age and college-age boys, to do together. With a few thousand years of tradition behind it, learning mosaic in a shop with generations of experience seemed like a good idea. I was wrong. It was a GREAT idea! We not only enjoyed laughing and tapping into our varying degrees of artistic skills, but learned more about mosaic and its modern day use in restorations and new creations. I loved this experience, and our family now has beautiful (to varying degrees) keepsakes from our time. Highly recommended if you can get in! Worth double the cost.

We had a lovely experience learning about the art of mosaics and how to make micromosaic jewelry. I was afraid my teenage son would not enjoy it, but he was so proud of his piece at the end! The owners are wonderful and so friendly and patient and their work is so interesting and impressive. Very happy that we were able to find this experience!

Highly recommend this tour, understanding the history or mosaics was fantastic and timely as it was just before our Vatican tour. The artists ensured each of our pieces were great. All 12 of us loved our necklaces

An absolute highlight of our trip! I brought my 14-yr old daughter to Italy and this is something we'll both remember forever. Giuliana (not sure if I'm spelling her name correctly) was our instructor and she was very nice. We were the only two guests for this class and got a ton of individualized attention. We learned about mosaics, generally, and then about the jewelry making process. We chose the charm shapes for our necklasses, then came up with ideas for what we wanted to create. We picked out pieces of glass from the many colors available, and then cut the glass into the tiny pieces to be used for our projects. We used the actual tools they use and then put everything together. Giuliana helped when we needed it and we were very happy with the pieces we made, which we'll get to keep forever. Note about the neighborhood: this is in the Monti area of Rome, which is a terrific place to spend time while in Rome. Tons of restaurants, vintage shops, and beautiful streets to walk around. The Mercato Monti Urban Market is also here - an indoor market with hand-made goods, thrifty things, and small business owners. This was walkable from our hotel near Piazza Navona, and many many other things are walkable from this spot.
