It was definitely an experience to remember! I had so much fun with my guide Swoyam who’s very helpful in translating and helping- took great care of me. The wonderful blacksmith who showed me how to make the Khukhuli and help me as I wished. It’s a very authentic cultural experience even hanging out with the blacksmith’s family- see what Nepal life is like. Both of them were phenomenal!!

Our young guide Swoyam was great, he was very friendly and translated well so that we could all understand each other. Our blacksmithing duo were amazing, it was a brilliant experience. They were so friendly and shared tea and biscuits with us. Please don't forget to tip them for their hard work and brilliant artistry!

Awesome experience making the knife from scratch, and a cool souvenir to take home! I needed up purchasing other knives while I was there to bring home as gifts. These workers are very skilled at their craft.

Wonderful afternoon making a gorgeous Kuhkri which I will treasure forever. Picked up by Guide who took me to the workshop and got busy hammering, grinding, sanding, shaping and polishing my piece of old scrap iron into my beautiful knife. They let you do as much or as little as you like, within reason. Would recommend this activity to anyone…

Such a fun afternoon, and came away with a beautiful Khukuri knife that I will treasure forever. They let you do as much or as little as you want, within reason, and you really feel like it is your knife. They will even personalise it for you. Definitely a great thing to do in Kathmandu. Amazing what they/you can do with an old piece of scrap metal...

It was a very interesting experience because I have never made a knife before. We were picked up by taxi and the guide who also translated to us, came with us. The workshop took place in the house of the blacksmith. He showed us every step and we helped hammering the heated steal. There are lots of steps like hammering, heating again, grinding, shining, then he also hammered the initials in and polished the knife. Lots of hard work must be done and it normally takes a whole day. The handle is made of Indian rose wood und the Halfter made of Buffalo Horn. During the break we had milk tea all t together. The knife now is a lovely gift for our children.

If you like to… - make stuff rather than buy stuff - be in a culture rather than observe it - engage in dialogue - see how upcycling of car suspensions, rosewood furniture, old plastic buckets can create your highest quality personalised and practical knife in your own hands and those of a talented craftsman …then making your own Khukuri hits the sweet spot 👍👍👍

Great experience and a good way to see more of Kathmandu and the people in it, plus you come away with a uniquely Nepalese keep sake.

This was a really cool experience. We attended as a family and enjoyed learning about and witnessing this being done. We did get to help with parts of making the knife and it is not easy. You get to see how these knives are made, by hand, in a small home blacksmith studio. People stopped by from the community that wanted their knives sharpened, etc so this is legit and not just a tourist activity plus you get to keep your knife (put it in your checked luggage, well wrapped as it is very sharp). Such a unique item to help remember your time in Nepal. If you are on the fence about this, do it, these guys are the last blacksmiths in their family.
