Itinerary
It consists of a walk of approximately 2 hours. We must cross rivers, swim a couple of times and climb the canyons. It is important for us to highlight this, we are going to cross the river walking on several occasions and swimming on two other occasions to reach the waterfall. With the help of guides and life jackets, even people who have never swum in their lives can achieve it, but it is not a super easy task, especially when we are in the rainy season (August, October and September). It's not a super difficult task either. Some recommendations are to bring hiking sandals or running shoes, remembering that these shoes will get wet. It is best to bring comfortable and light clothing, especially clothing that does not come off. In the last part of the experience, we swim through the middle of a beautiful narrow canyon that makes the current concentrate and become strong. We do not recommend water shoes unless they have a wide sole, if the sole is thin, over time the rocks will begin to feel painful on the foot.

We will pick you up in any place around Guanacaste. If you are in a gated community, remember that you need to send an authorization request for our entrance, is this is the case please ask about our driver ID number and we will be happy to give it to you.

Most amazing experience of a lifetime! So beautiful. We felt like adventurers! The hike was not as bad as some reviews made it seem. We took our time, went through caves, canyons, rivers, and of course to the falls.

From the time we were picked up from our hotel by Anthony, to the time we were dropped off everything went smooth and well executed. Anthony was very friendly and knowledgeable of the Costa Rican culture. Our guide was Nacho and he was very helpful and even took time to take pictures of us during the hike and waterfall. It’s a must see excursion.

We took many pictures , beautiful views , great people, the guide nacho excellent person and guide. Hernan we can’t be more grateful to have had him as our driver and guide as well , he is an amazing person thank you for show us beautiful places ,he taught us lots about the countries culture, food , etc but mostly he was very kind with us , thank you very much you give us the best impression of Costa Rica .

Amazing tour guider who took us! Name was hernan, he picked us up from our apartment was super friendly and talkative which we loved! Then brought us to la Leona which was beautiful and showed us the amazing culture and environment of Costa Rica

Alberto our guide was the best! He taught us a lot about Costa Rican culture and was extremely friendly. This was such a fun experience, great if you love to swim. We even saw monkeys! 10/10 recommend!

I can’t say enough good things about our hike to La Leona waterfall! This was our absolute favorite thing we did in Costa Rica. We were promptly picked up from our hotel by our tour guide Alberto. He went above and beyond to tell us all about Costa Rica and we shared stories along the way. I think we were all a little worried that the drive would be long and tiresome but it went by smoothly, and Alberto had a cooler full of refreshments for us just in case. The hike itself was unlike anything we’ve ever done. It was a mixture of climbing up rocks, hiking, swimming, sliding down a natural “water slide” into a blue pool, and finally reaching the waterfall. This was one of those times where the beauty was really in the journey. I felt like we could have stayed out there all day enjoying the fresh water, beautiful plants and animals we saw along the way. After our hike we had lunch at a local soda and the food was delicious. Alberto drove us back to the hotel and we had such an amazing experience that we decided to book the remainder of our excursions through this company. They even offered to pick us up and drop us off anywhere we needed for the remainder of our trip if we had trouble getting transport. If you do one thing in Costa Rica, book this tour!

This hike lets you explore nature at its greatest as you hike in nature. This hike can be for anyone and it doesn’t matter how physically fit you are.

Alberto was an amazing tour guide, so knowledgeable about the trees, water, and animals. Loved the hike (it was a good workout) crossing rivers, climbing up and down, seeing a troop of monkeys passing, and of course the highlight was the waterfall. I cannot recommend Alberto and Open Road Costa Rica any more. Truly this is the highlight of our trip. Pura Vida

Absolutely amazing experience!! I can’t say enough about wonderful Alberto was, as well as Fabio. They were so kind, helpful, knowledgeable, understood the ecosystem, history, rocks, trees and animals. Truly made the experience. The hike was great, strenuous, loved the water crossings, seeing a troop of monkeys and of course swimming at the waterfall. This has been the highlight of our trip. I highly recommend!!
