This review is more of a true 3.5 as we very much enjoyed the cooking class and treats we made. However, we did have a few frustrations with the process. I did this class with my boyfriend on our trip to Portugal and we were looking forwards to a hands-on experience making these treats. Unfortunately, the person leading the class seemed to pick us (out of the 6 other couples) to demonstrate almost every step on. This meant that he took our dough and completed all but two of the steps on it (those steps being sprinkling flour and making a ball) on it to demonstrate to the others what to do. This meant that we did not get to make the slits on our dough, beating the dough flat, make the initial roll out, folding the dough, re-rolling it out. If we did get to do these steps, we only got to do the end of it. The other couples got to do the process themselves, so perhaps this was just bad luck, but very frustrating nonetheless. It did not make sense to us why almost every step was demonstrated on our dough, yet some couples' dough was never used. Another frustration we had was that, despite you working on your own dough, the rolls are then combined with all the other couples and you communaly make the rest of the pastry. This means that at the end, you might be having pastel de nata that you had no hand in making, while someone else has the pastry you made. It seems that it would be very easy to keep the own doughs by making sure everyone gets their own roll of puff pastry back, cutting and shaping their own crusts, and then filling those with the custard they made. However, despite these frustrations, it was a fun experience (in part mostly to watch) with a very tasty result.
