I had a session booked, and the instructor gave me very little notice to travel over 21km to the new location. I had no way there. He blamed the swells for the location change - which is fair. I told him, not a worry, to simply cancel. But he then proceeded to be very rude, told me I “didn’t care for my safety” (I do, I’m not saying to surf in danger, just that i can’t make the new location so far away work) and informed me that regardless if I make it or not, he’s gonna charge me. He then threatened to take me to small claims court (over $150) if I didn’t pay. I’d say this business is probably struggling if they’re that desperate to keep customer money due to bad weather. I would advise you to book someone else with better customer service.

This was a great experience for my husband and 10 year old son. We met the instructor at a van near the beach to get wetsuits on and surfboards. Wetsuits are obviously a must with the cold water. My son said the water did not feel cold with the wetsuit on. One of the most important things our instructor taught us was the stingray shuffle. California is known to have a lot of shallow water stingrays. In order to avoid getting stung and stepping on them, you are taught to shuffle your feet in the sand.
Next we walked out to the beach for a 20 minute tutorial on how to properly grab the board and position your body.
Then they hit the waves. My son was a natural as most kids are with their low center of gravity. My husband did okay. We ended a little early because they were both exhausted. It takes a lot of energy! We had a great time and I can not say anything negative about this company.

Hunter, our instructor, was excellent! He got is up on the board and surfing!
He began with the basics from safety to practicing the pop-up on land before we got into the water. The waves were choppy and very close together so we had to turn our board and line up quickly.
Great experience!

Pros: The instructor was pretty good - very typical surf pal, waiting for my twin 12 year-olds in a van on the street that does not move. Boards and wet suits were fine, and he spent a fair amount of time with them prior to hitting the water and reviewing basic surf skills. They have had many instructor-led surfing experiences in Cocoa Beach, FL, so the Pacific was a little different and this instructor spent time teaching them a few new things no one had ever mentioned. He was a pretty cool cat.
Cons: The water was a little rough and more than they had experienced in FL, even following a hurricane. They caught a few good waves, but it was hard for us to see them because the instructor took them pretty far away and across an inlet that they had to swim through prior to entering the main ocean, so we could not follow them all the way. This was a little frustrating, as we had to trust that he would keep his eye on them (which he did), and we couldn't really get any great photos or videos because they were little dots in the water.
Don't look for a shop or school, as one would find in FL, there isn't one. GPS takes you to a dead-end road and you have to look for the van parked on the street, that the instructor advised had not been driven in years. It was ok, but just felt sketchy - not unsafe though, it is a nice neighborhood. The restrooms are pretty far away, so if anyone needs to go, do that prior to hitting the beach. I would probably book this again, it's just not what we are used to. There were no lifeguards to speak of when we surfed, but I felt ok with the instructor in the water with them.

Favorite part was riding the waves. It was a bit difficult to stand because you need to balance. However our instructor was very patient and kind. You can tell he loves his job.
