Itinerary

At the Kyoto Shibori Museum, your Japanese craft class shows you how to dye a 86cm x 89cm silk cotton furoshiki (wrapping cloth) using the sekka shibori method. You'll end up with a beautiful cotton furoshiki to serve as a souvenir of your trip to Kyoto. Classes are usually individual and take 30 minutes to 60 minutes per class.

Start by choosing your favorite color and learning how to fold your fabric in a particular way. Put the folded fabric in between two boards then dye your fabric.

While your fabric is drying, rinsing and drying (about 30 minutes), you'll learn more about shibori. Browse art pieces, tools, and samples displayed in the museum, and try on a shibori kimono, if you wish. The museum shop also sells a variety of shibori items, souvenirs, fabrics, and more.

The Shibori Museum was awesome. The educational video, Passion and talent of the staff, and beauty of the art was a highlight of our trip. The activity of creating and dyeing the furoshiki was pretty quick and very straight forward.

I wasn’t sure if this was an experience that the instructors did for us or we were able to complete on our own. We did this class entirely on our own and the instructor was very detailed in how to fold and dye the fabric. This studio has been here for 85 years and they were very proud to show us around and explain the different techniques. I would come back here again and do something else.

I enjoyed the process of Shibori dyeing. While dyeing, we had a chance to see the Shibori Museum. There was a wonderful exhibition of the Shibori fabrics which was created by 50 artisans and took 50 years. Just amazing!!
