Visit: Shamarra Alpacas, 328 Wainui Main Road, Akaroa 7582, New Zealand

You’ll find your new furry friends here in a beautiful harbour on the slopes of an extinct volcano and overlooked by craggy volcanic hills. Shamarra Alpacas is just over an hour’s drive (73km) from Christchurch Central, and only a 20 minute trip from the historic seaside village of Akaroa, which is worth visiting for its culture and architecture alone. Our panoramic views of Akaroa Harbour and the rolling hills and peaks of the surrounding valleys are breathtaking and will make every one of your selfies with an alpaca post-worthy.

We are open year-round, with the scenery changing beautifully through each season and the alpacas staying cute throughout.

Rude guide, he shouts at the kids. Without any patience. So bad experience. They have shocked me, I never thought this would happen in NZ. Really bad experience. Even horrible

Very well organised, informative and interactive tour! There's a lot to learn about how to interact respectfully with the alpacas and Rising Sun, the king of the alpacas here, is such a star. The guides were also very helpful and egged us to interact with the alpacas, showing us individual sweet spots of each individual alpaca. The scenery was beautiful as well! At the end of the tour, they even provided light refreshments and the toilets were very clean.

If you are an animal lover, a visit to Shamarra Alpacas is one of the very best ways you can spend an hour!!! The staff are incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable, sharing so much interesting information about their beautiful alpacas. The alpacas are simply amazing - from cuddles with the boys to feeding the girls and babies, being surrounded by these amazing animals brings so much joy!!!! Akaroa is a beautiful little part of New Zealand, and Shamarra Alpacas are just the icing in the cake!

The farm was great. It was so much fun to see the alpacas and have a chance to interact with them. The guide was good about answering out questions. It was also so much fun feeding them. I would recommend it.

I had been looking forward to this visit for a couple of years now and it was very good. It was the only "must do" on my NZ visit. You can see the alpacas up close and the location is amazing. I didn't think much information was provided about the farm itself because most of the time is spent with the alpacas. Which is time well spent. I picked up a nice hat to go with my winter coat as well!

Not the Alpacas fault however, we came in on a cruise and there was absolutely no way to get to the farm. No taxis, no Uber nothing. We could not get there and we were not the only ones with tickets and no way to get there. My daughter and her friend were so disappointed. Viator should note, there is no transportation available in the town and not accessible if you don't have a car.

Absolutely adorable alpacas. You could hug them and feed them. The guys taking us around where knowledgable, and they offered tours in both English and Mandarin. Afterwards you got some refreshments and cookie. Highly recommend! Just be aware that getting to the place involves driving up a steep road. Worked well for my Toyota Aqua but you gotta be confident ;)
