My daughter is a doctoral student in Byzantine Art History. We have traveled all over the eastern Mediterranean and Italy studying the important sites. Saint Catherine’s monastery has long been on our Byzantine bucket list. As she gets closer to completing her dissertation, we decided that this year (in spite of political challenges) we needed to go to Saint Catherine’s. I arranged this trip via Viator with Egypt Tours Club. We traveled from Sharm to Saint Catherine on a day trip. Our guide, Halim, was knowledgeable and very well prepared. He had been guiding for 18 years and everyone knew him at all of the stops along then way. Saint Catherine‘s is one of the most remarkable spots in the world. It’s at the foot of Mount Sinai and has spots associated with Moses in the Old Testament. It has been continuously occupied for 1500 years in part because of the unlikely protection of The prophet Mohammed and Napoleon Bonaparte. It’s beautiful. It’s fascinating. It’s unique.
