Our guide Mr. Shoji picked us up from our Hotel and took us on a train to the Sumo Stable. Mr Shoji went out of his way to help us keep our luggage at the Nippori station even though I made a last-minute request. He explained all the rules of Sumo clearly on the train, as it is pretty far from the core of Tokyo, and we had enough time.  Watching them was definitely one of the best experiences we have had. It was an honor to see Sumo wrestlers in training. We definitely now have an appreciation for it and understand the intricacies of the sport even more. We understood all the rules and why of the sport. Its about 20 mins walk from the station. Make sure you carry a hat or a cap as it can get hotter in Tokyo.

The stable is home to many wrestlers who put on a fine demonstration of their skills. But the facility is very remote and tough to navigate to without good Japanese language skills. Cab fare was 8,000 yen. Also, the facility where you view the wrestlers is not designed to accommodate visitors. Viewing is done from mats on the floor and there are no chairs for someone who might be old or partially disabled.

Amazing experience seeing the wrestlers train. Our guide was fantastic, and we visited a beautiful temple on the way back to the station after the stable.

Our guide Yuka was great and very knowledgeable about all things Sumo. She was a perfect tour guide - met us at our hotel and brought us to the Sumo ‘stable’ to watch the practice session. Super interesting!

Enjoyed the training session very much, our guide was very kind and though we arrived a bit late it all worked out except it was very crowded so one of our party did not have a place to sit. Later 3 more people came in and sat but our friend was not seated. Unfortunately it was quite far from our hotel. The Sumo Wrestlers were very friendly and allowed pictures.

We walked down to our lobby and SK-sama was already waiting for us. He had sent our hotel some information beforehand, so we had read up about what to expect and some rules for the training stable. It was our first full day in Tokyo, so it was very helpful that SK-sama showed us to the subway and how to get a ticket at the station for local trains. The sumo training stable itself was great and very interesting, we were able to ask SK-sama questions as we were watching and he was ready with a binder of answers! The sumo wrestlers were very impressive and friendly when we asked for pictures afterwards. Overall our favorite part though was getting to know SK-sama. He was full of information about Tokyo and gave us recommendations for the rest of our stay in Japan. He really went above and beyond to make us feel welcomed and we were sad to say goodbye! He was our first friend in Japan :)

What an amazing cultural event!! Sumo wrestling is a revered sport in Japan and so very little understood by Westerners. Our guide Keio, while on the subway delivered her "lesson" (as she called it) on all the basic but essential facts on the sport/art of Sumo wrestling. This instruction was enlightening and extremely helpful to our gaining an understanding of what we would see as well as viewing etiquette expectations to which we were to adhere. The event itself was fascinating!! We were fortunate to view two renowned wrestlers in a training session but each participant was fascinating to observe. Given a perfunctory knowledge on what we would be viewing was essential and much appreciated. We were especially fortunate to have such a wonderful guide Keio. She not only artfully prepared us for the training session but also provided immense support in assisting us on our return trip to the hotel which is typically up to the client to arrange. We highly recommend participation in this event! We departed from Japan for home that evening feeling that we had been gifted with an amazing parting impression of Japan!
