What could be better than a little light snow when in the Alps? The 90 minute stopover in Saint Moritz was ample time to have some lunch and, of course, purchase chocolates. The Bernina Express was a delightful ride through the snow covered Alps. It was a great tour.

We missed the tour due to poor directions as to the meeting point AND no one was available to answer a call or email until well after the pick up time to help clarify. We had to rely on locals in the area for directions and they all said one place when in actuality it was another place. A simple direction of “the Zani Viaggi stop next to the Hop in Hop off bus stop” would have made it 100% clearer. There would have been no confusion.

Be prepared for a long day of sitting! ~5 hours on the bus, and 2.5 on the train. The views are absolutely amazing, and I think the trek up there is definitely worth it, but if you have the ability to do it yourself, forgo the tour.

The regional trains in Italy we use in Bologna area are very good option to go at nearby cities: Ravenna, Modena, Ferrara. Do not buy online tickets: you have to check-in before you enter the train, and nobody in the railway station knows exactly how to do it. If you bought already a n online ticket, just show it to the train conductor before you enter the train and ignore the warning written on the ticket. A simpler solution is to buy ticket at the tobacco shop in the station in Bologna or at the ticket offices. Before you enter in the train, you have to stamp it in the station (there are special devices in the station) and you can use it for 4 hours. The railway stations and trains are very crowded but we managed to find a place. The trains are many and the go without delays.

The scenery was by far the best part of the trip. We were not real happy we had to share the trip with people who did not understand English. Also, our guide's use of the English language was very difficult to follow. So much so, we sometimes couldn't tell when she finished her explanations in English and switched to Spanish. We felt she did not mingle much with the group. The bus was difficult to get into and out of as there were no hydraulics to lower the bus for easy entry. Also, the bus driver did not assist us. Leg room was limited and uncomfortable especially when people leaned their seats back. This was my second time taking this tour and my memories from the first were much more positive.

Angelo was a great guide and always kept the group prepared for the next step. The train was very comfortable and it was amazing to have the windows down for pictures while snow from the Alps blew into the train. St. Moritz was very walkable with great dining and shopping.
