We had a dreadful experience at Doge’s Palace. Our tour guide was an older gentleman with an extremely heavy Italian accent and was not understandable. Viator refused to refund any portion of this tour. I will think twice about booking any Viator tours again!

We saw parts of the beautiful Doges Palace however; this tour was extremely unorganized, overcrowded and not timely. We were passed from “colleague” to “colleague” over and over again. None of the tour guides had any urgency to help us. We waited 15 mins past the start time. Then we waited longer to get into the palace. Inside the tour guide was kind and knowledgeable but she told us lots of parts of palace were only shown on extra tours. Then when we walked to the gondolas, we waited for over 1 hour for our ride. There were dozens and dozens of people waiting. Other tour groups came after us and were allowed to go on the gondola ride before us. People were very patient for the most part. When we were finally able to ride, people behind us were yelling and upset we were allowed to go. The whole thing was frustrating and very unorganized!

Doge’s Palace and the gondola ride were really cool. That being said the tour was poorly organized/scheduled. First we meet a guide at the tour office, we left the tour office to walk to another place to meet another guide, who then walked us to Doge’s palace. These are all within a few minutes walk of each other and took up a lot of time. As the tour started, our guide announced we’d be done around 5:15ish. We booked the Doge Palace and gondola ride package and had to be at another place by 5pm for the gondola (most in our group only booked the palace tour part). We ended up having to leave the tour early just to make the gondola ride. Also, at the beginning of the tour they gave us our tickets to the museum for our self-guided portion of tour, but was told it would be closed before our guided tour ended and we should use use them the next day. So we didn’t get part of the tour since we were just in Venice for the day. Frustrating. We would have gladly picked up the tickets to the museum earlier and done the self-guided part prior to the palace tour if we had known. Our guide for the Doge’s Palace was clearly knowledgeable. However, her presentation was just a nonstop stream of consciousness and she was hard to follow most of the time. It was as if she didn’t have a prepared agenda/tour. Very odd.

The history is incredible but a heads-up about the amount of stairs would’ve been good, anyone with mild limited mobility this is not the tour for you.

Honestly it was Meh. The tour guide spoke with a heavy accent that was difficult to understand at times. He just seemed to be going through the motions and didn’t interject any excitement into his tour.

Mille Grazie
