Itinerary
From beautifully built furniture to exquisitely carved woodwork in temples, the city of Kandy has a long and ancient tradition in wood crafting. The craft has been passed down in special artisan families to this day. At the workshop, you will find artisans practicing their craft, carving complex figures of Buddha and other gods and goddesses, detailed figurines of elephants and other animals, and scenes of village life such as traditional fishing or water pot bearing women.
An artisan will introduce himself to you and demonstrate the techniques used for wood carving by carving some simple figurines. After the figurines are all carved, you will be taught the methods to paint woodcarvings.
You will then be given the newly carved figurines (often elephants) to paint and make your own design on. The paints, brushes and other equipment will also be provided there. You and your family, especially the kids, will enjoy this part of the workshop immensely. At the end of the workshop, you will be able to take home these figurines that you hand-painted as a souvenir. Your workshop will be completed an hour after the start time.
