Italy is a Southern European country. It is widely acknowledged as the birthplace of Western culture, alongside Greece. It is also home to the greatest number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the world.
Italy would have to be one of the most architecturally rich countries in the world with its monuments, buildings, ruins and high art scatter throughout the country. The majority of Italys landmass is a peninsula lazing on the beautiful Mediterranean Sea, and is bordered by Austria, Switzerland, France, and Slovenia in the north.
Italy, which is commonly referred to as "the boot", is engulfed by the Tyrrhenian and Ligurian Seas to the west, the Mediterranean and Ionian Seas to the South, and the Adriatic Sea to the East.
Oddly enough there are two completely independent mini-states surrounded entirely by Italy: San Marino and Vatican City. Italian is still the official language in both countries. The major cities of Italy are Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, Palermo, Genoa, Bologna, Florence, Tuscany, Pisa, Bari and Venice.
